31ST GERMANFEST PICNIC GUIDE
The 31st Annual GermanFest Picnic will be held August 8, 9, & 10 at Carillon Park. The theme this year focuses on the 50th Anniversary of the Dayton-Augsburg Sister City relationship. Special exhibits will include materials from Augsburg. Other than E-Mail and Facebook, this insert will be the last printed information before the Fest – please review!
If you have not already done so, treat yourself to video highlights of our 2013 Fest. A one minute version and a 14 minute version are available through our website: www.daytongermanclub.org. Open the Picnic tab. Or you can go to You Tube – Dayton GermanFest –there are some older versions on You Tube. These videos will definitely get you into the Fest spirit.
We had another excellent year in 2013 with about 35,000 visitors. We were voted the #3 festival in the region in 2011 and this year we were named by the Dayton Daily News as being one of the top 11 food festivals in the region.
We need all members and their families and friends to support the event –first by volunteering to work, secondly by attending the Picnic and encouraging everyone you know to attend, and lastly by publicizing the event and selling some 50/50 tickets. Our volunteers make all the difference including various community groups from Special Olympics and the St Anne’s Hill Association as well as Boy Scouts and church groups.
Urgent needs –
#1 Raffle – Sarah Papp is again chairing the Grand/Mini Raffle. We now need folks to solicit donations for the Mini Raffle—gift coupons, free pizzas, merchandise, hair sessions, etc. Please ask—the worst they can do is say no. We have donation request letters that can be left with merchants. We also can use booth and ticket selling volunteers—contact her at 614-582-5919 or firstname.lastname@example.org or Brenda Stahl at 254-1477 to help or with prizes/questions. We are aiming for a $5,000 50/50 for the Grand Raffle—tickets are for sale at $5 each. Please step up and buy/sell some—contact any Board member or stop by the Klubhaus to get 50/50 tickets.
#2 Loading, Set-up, Teardown, Cleanup
We need folks on Thursday August 7th, 6PM at the clubhouse to help move items from storage to staging area and then to load the trucks and on Friday, August 8th at 8:30AM at the park to help with set up. Tables, chairs, bunting, decorations, cooking area, pop up tents, etc all need set up. Many hands are needed. Lunch and drinks will be provided. We reverse the process on Sunday starting at 5PM and then unload trucks at the DLT. Cleanup at the Klubhaus begins on Monday at 9AM.
#3 Wine Booth
We will have two wine/Jaegermeister booths again this year—contact Nichole Lashley at 271-1226 to volunteer. These booths have become very popular along with our Winegarten.
#4 Workers/ Volunteers
It’s time to start volunteering, signing up for work shifts. Contact your chairperson—beer, food cooking/serving, children’s area, etc. Call Eben Bonear 438-8552 or Trudy Campbell 864-5859 for master volunteer listing. If you don’t know who to contact call me –John Koerner-429-9251.

We reducing the number of outside food vendors and expanding Liederkranz food service, including an EXPRESS DINNER line –so extra help is needed.

We will again have the special craft beer trailer this year in addition to our usual unmatched selection of German brews. We are planning on a Riegele Bier Garten to celebrate the Picnic theme as well as our usual Bier & Wine Gartens. We are in need of workers to handle everything from pouring and serving to handling money, tickets, and wrist bands in a typically fast-paced pressure environment during peak hours.

Support the true German ethnic spirit by appearing in the Trachten Show. Call Silvie Schrumpf – 705-6060 to participate. The new features she introduced last year were a big hit. Jamie Jarosik, TV2 meteorologist, will emcee the show.
If you have Trachten that you would be willing to lend for the Picnic—especially for young folks who might be selling raffle tickets, etc. please contact me—John Koerner—429-9251.
Volunteers to help the Chairman solicit sponsors, donations, and push the PR window—needed NOW.
A sponsor/donor guide is available. Donations can be made to Dayton History/Carillon Park for tax purposes, earmarked for the Picnic. PR is well underway with brochure distribution at World Affair and other locations. Press releases and ads have been done. Fliers available now. Yard signs were available at the June Picnic meeting and a supply remains at the Klubhaus.
#6 13th GermanFest Picnic 5k/10k
Unique awards and tee shirts will again be featured at our 5k/10k race/walk starting at 630PM on Friday the 8th. Registration forms are available at www.keysports.net, or www.itsyourrace.com . Andrew Koerner – 269-3359 or email@example.com is the Race Director. The 10k race is part of a new race series –The Gem City Classic 10k Series.
#7 Opening Ceremonies
Our Opening Ceremony – scholarship awards and keg tapping is slated for 6:30 Friday with TV 2’s Brian Davis. We will announce the Augsburg theme including having beer from the Riegele Brewery – an 800 year old family brewery in Augsburg.
